OMusic by Long Beach singer/writer Olga Tapia. Olga performs music from her debut album, Negatively Geotropic, which touches on a common element found in human experience: the point where desire and change meet. The album title refers to the innate principle a plant follows as it grows against gravity in its search for the sun. The artist feels the same principle applies to people’s desire and struggle in growth as change happens. All that said, combined with deceptively simple lyrics--raw and honest, Olga’s uniquely stirring voice moves the listener to long for emotions evoked by what they desire. Thurday April 21 @ 7 pm
Former Latina magazine writer, Robyn Moreno, reads from her book “Border-Line Personalities: A Generation of Latinas Dish on Sex, Sass & Cultural Shifting”. The book, edited by Ms. Moreno and fellow Latina writer Michelle Herrera Mulligan, explore contemporary topics that affect all latinas living in the U.S. In this book the two writers address such questions as: What does it mean to be a Latina in 21st century America? How important is speaking Spanish or keeping the Catholic faith, eating tostones or dancing to Salsa? How do Latinas deal with ongoing identity conflicts and demeaning stereotypes? All these issues are addressed through poignant, yet funny stories and anecdotes. Other performers on this special evening are: Jackie Guerra (comedienne/actress/host), Lorenza Munoz (entertainment writer for the LA Times), and Adriana Lopez (author).
